Degree Requirements & Academic Policies

The Graduate Catalog is the primary source for the requirements and policies that pertain to your enrollment, degree requirements, graduation criteria, etc. These are just a few of the important topics that students should become familiar with.

Grade Requirements

Grade forgiveness does not apply at the graduate level. 

Foundation Proficiency Courses

Foundation proficiency (prerequisite) courses, whether taken at the undergraduate level or as graduate-level Accelerated MBA Foundation courses, must be completed within the last ten (10) years with grades of B or better.

MBA and Graduate Certificate Courses

Passing: C or higher. Credit toward degree is awarded.
Failing: C- or below. No credit toward degree is awarded. Course must be repeated.

GPA Requirements

GPA requirements to remain in Good Academic Standing and to qualify for graduation.

Overall Cumulative GPA (graduate):  3.0 or higher
MBA Program GPA:  3.0 or higher

Viewing your Degree Audit and Degree Plan

Your degree audit lists all of the requirements for your degree and shows your progress toward completing them. You should review your degree audit and degree plan at least once a semester. Your degree plan can be found by logging into your degree audit, selecting the ‘Plans’ tab. The following video will help you better understand how to view your degree plan (updated video coming soon!)

Registration

Auto-Registration

In spring 2020, our office began auto-registering students for their next semester courses based on their degree plans. This process has proven to alleviate students of this added responsibility, allowing you to focus on your coursework. We will continue this process and notify you each semester when the registration process starts and is completed. 

Registration Holds

Registration holds are our Achilles' Heel when it comes to registration. Simply put - we can't register you if you have registration holds and we typically can't resolve them for you. Please view and resolve your potential registration holds before the registration period begins each semester.

Viewing Registration Holds

If you're not sure how to view your holds, start by consulting the Viewing Holds reference page. If you do not have any of the following registration holds, skip down to the FAQs.

Most Common Holds

  • Financial Responsibility Statement (the #1 culprit behind registration errors; this will not appear on your hold screen before registration begins, but can be cleared before that time): The most common reason we're unable to register students is due to Financial Responsibility holds. Thankfully, these are the easiest holds to resolve, but this must be done every semester. 
  • Immunization/Medical Record Holds: All admitted students must satisfy immunization verification requirements or submit the appropriate waiver if they are a fully online student. Consult the Immunization Status resource page for more information.
  • Provisional Admission Holds: If you were provisionally admitted due to an outstanding admission document, the document must be received by the UWF Graduate School for your hold to be lifted/removed. Please follow-up with the Graduate School.
  • Conditional Admission Holds: If you were conditionally admitted due to an undergraduate GPA below 3.0, your hold will not become active until the last day of the current semester, allowing for registration. Shortly after final grades are posted, we will review your progress and, if appropriate, have the hold removed or temporarily lifted. If you failed to meet the academic requirements of your conditional admission, we will reach out to you.

After Registration

New Students

If you're a new student, your first step after being registered for classes should be to upgrade your MyUWF account to a full-access ArgoNet account to activate your student email and gain access to essential student resources. All UWF email communications are conducted via your student email account. 

Course Access

The Classmate app includes access to your class schedule, course details, syllabus, Canvas (eLearning) textbooks, tuition & fees, etc.

Courses are made available via Canvas (eLearning). Courses will not appear on your Canvas Dashboard until 8am (Central) the first day of the class unless the instructor provides early access. 

Drops & Withdrawals

Dropping or withdrawing from a class can impact your graduation date, future enrollment, financial aid, tuition assistance, etc.  There are also specific eligibility timeframes for Drop/Add and Withdrawal.  Make sure you understand these implications and deadlines before dropping or withdrawing from a course.

titleFinancial Aid & Scholarships

If you are using financial aid, contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships before dropping or withdrawing from a course as your award may be affected.

Dropping a Course

  • Removing a course you registered for from your class list during the Drop/Add period. The course does not appear on your transcript.
  • The fact that you registered for this course is not documented anywhere on your record; it essentially disappears.
  • Instructions for Dropping a Course - This option is only available during the Drop/Add Period.  You will need to consult with your advisor first to get your Advising PIN.

Withdrawing from a Course

  • Removing a course from your class list after the Add/Drop period has ended.
  • The course will remain on your transcript and a “W” will appear in place of a grade.
    • A “W” does not affect GPA; however, it does affect your completion rate.
  • Instructions for Withdrawing from a Course - This option is available after the Drop/Add Period.  You will need to consult with your advisor first to get your Advising PIN.

Financial Aid and Scholarships - It is imperative to contact Financial Aid before dropping or withdrawing from a course as your financial aid (scholarships, grants, tuition waivers) may be affected.

MBA ePortfolio

Industry Selection

(warning) The same industry should be used for all four ePortfolio papers, unless you have been granted an exception by the MBA Office. By focusing your research on the same industry, you will build an ePortfolio that demonstrates an in-depth understanding across the functional areas of business.

MBA ePortfolio Courses

There are four MBA Core Courses that require completion of an ePortfolio paper:

  1. ECP 6705 Advanced Managerial Economics
  2. FIN 6406 Financial Management
  3. ISM 6137 Business Analytics
  4. MAR 6815 Marketing Management

ePortfolio Papers & Rubrics

In each ePortfolio course, the instructor will evaluate your final portfolio paper using a grading rubric, which will be returned to you.  It is your responsibility to download, save, and backup all graded rubrics and final papers as soon as they are satisfactorily completed. 

Warning

You will lose access to the course in Canvas after each course ends, so it is imperative that graded rubrics are downloaded and saved in a timely manner, once they become available.

Backup your documents!

We strongly recommend using your UWF Google Drive to backup your papers and graded rubrics.  As a UWF student, you have free access to Drive and other Google apps.

Submitting your ePortfolio and Other Exit Requirements

In your final semester of the program, you will submit your final MBA ePortfolio and complete other exit requirements. Detailed instructions for doing so will be emailed to all prospective graduates at the start of your final semester. This is an important part of our MBA Program assessment. You will not be cleared for graduation without this component completed. 


Warning

All exit requirements must be completed no later than the final day of the semester, unless otherwise stated.  You will not be cleared for graduation without completing all required steps.  The earlier in the semester, the better!

What are all of the exit requirements?

In addition to submitting a Graduation Application, you will have three (3) major exit requirements, as well as one (1) optional step. 

  1. Exit Questionnaire (required)
  2. Portfolio Submission (required)
  3. Continuous Improvement Survey (required)
  4. Exit Interview (optional)

The Exit Questionnaire includes three (3) parts:

title2. ePortfolio submission instructions (required)

Your portfolio must include the four (4) graded rubrics and four (4) papers from the following courses:

Saving your Portfolio Papers & Graded Rubrics

Before submitting your portfolio, ensure that they are saved in the proper format using the following instructions:

  1. Locate your four portfolio papers and their corresponding graded rubrics
  2. Convert each file to PDF format
  3. Combine the rubric and its corresponding paper into a single PDF file
  4. Save each file using the following naming convention: LAST-FIRST_UWF ID_COURSE#.pdf
    1. ex: Smith-Sally_970000000_ISM6137.pdf

You will end up with four (4) files (one per course).  Note that, if we substituted a course for one of the above, please include the substitute course paper and rubric in its place.

Submitting your ePortfolio

  1. Log into Google Drive using your ArgoNet credentials.  Do not use your personal Google account to submit your MBA portfolio.
  2. Create a new Google Drive folder
    1. In the upper-left corner, click New.  Select Folder.
    2. Name folder using the following naming convention: LAST-FIRST_UWF ID_MBA Portfolio 202X0X
      1. ex: Smith-Sally_970000000_MBA Portfolio 202108
    3. Click Create.  This will return you to the My Drive page.
  3. Upload your portfolio files to the new Google Drive folder.
    1. In the upper-left corner, click New.  Select File upload.
    2. Locate and select the file to upload. Click Open.
    3. Repeat these steps until all four (4) files are uploaded.
  4. Share your portfolio folder.
    1. After all four (4) files have been uploaded, return to the My Drive page.
    2. Right-click on the new Google Drive folder. Select Share.
    3. Enter "mba@uwf.edu" in the Add people and groups field.
      1. Make sure the Notify people box is checked.
      2. Add a note (optional).
      3. Click Send.
    4. The MBA Office will then receive an email notification that you have shared your portfolio folder with us. We will follow up with you within a few days to confirm receipt.

A link to the survey will be emailed to all prospective graduates at the start of your final semester.

title4. Exit Interview (optional)

If you would like to have a one-on-one discussion about the MBA program, provide additional feedback, or address concerns or issues you may, you may schedule an exit interview with your advisor.  The exit interview is optional; opting out will not affect your eligibility to graduate.

All other exit requirements (items 1-3) must be completed at least 72 hours before an exit interview.  Failure to do so could result in your appointment being rescheduled.

Scheduling instructions will be emailed to all prospective graduates at the start of your final semester.

The UWF Academic Calendaris the primary resource for registration dates, deadlines, and University holidays.

Parts of Term

Parts of Term are the designated dates within a full semester or term. Courses that start/end in different parts of term may have different Drop/Add periods that could potentially affect tuition charges/refunds issued to students. Courses in the MBA Program are primarily offered during the following terms:

  • POT 1 = Full semester
  • POT 2 = First half of semester
  • POT 3 = Second half of semester
  • POT 96 (summer only) = First half of semester
  • POT 90 (summer only) = Second half of semester

The term Part of Term is sometimes also referred to in abbreviated or shortened form (ex: Part of Term 1 maybe referred to as POT 1, Term 1, or T1).

titleDo I need an Advising PIN?

Nope! Since we take care of your registration, you do not need to request an Advising PIN (AKA: Alternate PIN).

The only time you will need a PIN is to Drop or Withdraw from a course. In that case, we ask that you reach out to your advisor to discuss ramifications and possible options.

titleWhat classes am I being registered for?

Your registration will be based on the courses listed on your degree plan. Please review yours and email your advisor if you foresee issues.

titleHow long does the auto-registration process take?

This process takes approximately two to three weeks to complete, so you may not be registered on the first day of registration.

titleWill classes fill up before the auto-registration process is finished?

Don't be alarmed! We have processes in place (i.e.: degree plans, registration restrictions) to ensure our students get the classes they need when they need them.

Absolutely! Your advisor will send you a confirmation email containing your registration information.

If you see that you're registered for only one/some of your classes and have not received a registration confirmation email, we're probably still working on it. If you have received a registration confirmation email, please reach out to your advisor.

Don't be alarmed if you see that you've been registered but haven't heard from us, yet. We'll be working through each student's file, one-by-one.

titleWhat about students using state employee tuition waivers?

We have been given permission to register our state waiver students prior to the start of the semester. Therefore, we will process your registration at the same time as all other students.

titleHow will I know what I'm taking each semester?
  • Our program is designed for students who generally take 6 credit hours (2 classes) each semester. Your advisor will tell you each semester via email exactly which courses you should take.
  • Our program is cohort based, so we offer a selection of courses each semester. Thus, we do not offer every course in our program every semester.
  • Please keep in mind that deviation from your degree plan can significantly defer your graduation. Any deviation from the degree plan should be discussed with your advisor prior to registration.
  • Once you have been admitted, your advisor will create a degree plan which shows your path through the MBA program, which includes the courses you will take and the semesters in which you will take them. 

To access your degree plan:

  1. Log in to MyUWF.
  2. Search and select “degree audit”.
  3. Click the "Plans" tab (top middle).
  4. Click the plan you want to review from the list (it will change from grey to blue).
  5. Select the “View” you want to see (at the top right drop down box). I think that "academic year" might be most helpful.

titleHow many hours can I expect to spend on coursework per week?

For a full time (6 credits) load, you can expect to spend an average of 12-15 hours per week (outside of class for on-campus students) on course assignments. Some classes may require more time, and some may require less.

titleHow long will it take me to complete the MBA?

We are cohort-based, and our students generally take 6 credit hours per semester. Your time to completion is based on our course projection and degree plan. However, if you follow your degree plan, you can complete your MBA in as few as 5-6 semesters.

titleCan I take more courses each semester to finish earlier?

It may be possible to take an additional course in a semester. Communicate with your advisor to understand your options and implications of doing so.

titleWhat should I do if I need to remove myself from a course?

If you find that you must remove yourself from a course, timing is everything! Up through the end of the add/drop period, which is the first week of the term, you can drop your course without academic penalty. If you must leave a course after the first week, you must withdraw. When you withdraw from a course, you will receive a grade of W, which does not carry a consequence for your GPA. A W may impact your financial aid eligibility.

You should always contact your advisor before making any schedule changes, whether it be adding, dropping, or withdrawing.

titleHow are exams and tests given in online classes?

Professors may administer exams in the following ways:

  • Proctor U (there is a fee associated with Proctor U, which is not included in your tuition and fees). Typically you can expect to pay $20-$30 per exam.
  • Respondus Lockdown Browser/Monitor (there is no charge for Respondus)
  • Testing in person at a testing facility (there may be fees)

Your professor will indicate testing information on the syllabus.

Online vs. Face-to-Face

titleIs there a difference between the OL and F2F MBA? Are they the same degree?

The curricula for both the online and face-to-face MBA are the same regardless of modality. Your transcript does not indicate whether you completed your MBA in the face-to-face or online modality.

titleCan I switch between the OL and F2F MBA?

It is possible to switch once between online and face-to-face. While the curricula are the same, the course rotations between the online and face-to-face MBA are different. If you are considering a change, contact your advisor to discuss this option.

titleIs there a hybrid MBA that allows me to combine OL and F2F courses?

If you are in the online program, ALL coursework is done online. For face-to-face students, all MBA core courses are face-to-face and meet evenings; emphasis courses, and GEB 5878 and GEB 5930 are exclusively online. There may be occasions in which we must offer a core course online.

titleI need to take a reduced load or sit out a semester. How will that impact my degree completion?

We understand life happens and our students have a variety of needs. It is possible to take either a reduced load or sit out a semester! However, because we do not offer each course every semester, your advisor will update your plan to redistribute your courses. Please keep in mind that a change like this will likely your time to degree completion.

Academic Standing (GPA, grades, etc.)

titleWhat must I do to remain in Good Academic Standing?

To be in good academic standing, you must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher at the end of each semester. If your GPA is below 3.0, you will be placed on academic probation for the next semester in which you enroll. If you do not bring up your GPA to at least 3.0 at the end of the next semester, you will be a candidate for academic suspension. Suspended students must sit out at least one semester before being reinstated to the program. Both your MBA GPA and graduate GPA must be 3.0 or higher to graduate.

titleWhat is the minimum grade required to pass a class?

Candidates are required to complete all courses with a grade of 'C' or higher. Course grades of C- and below are considered failing, and you will not receive credit for that course.

titleIs there Grade Forgiveness in the MBA Program?

There is no grade forgiveness at the graduate level. A passing grade is a grade of C or higher. If you earn a C- or below in a course, you must retake the course. The original grade and the retake grade are both calculated in your GPA.

Student Funding / Tuition and Fees

titleHow can I pay for my education?
  • The UWF Financial Aid Office manages aspects of financing your education. Please refer to the Financial Aid Office for options on financing. Also, the Cashier’s Office offers a payment plan.
  • For face-to-face students only, we offer limited departmental scholarships and graduate assistantships. At this time, online MBA students are not eligible for departmental scholarships or graduate assistantships.

titleCan I use the Florida State Employee Tuition Waiver?

Florida State Employee Tuition Waivers cannot be applied toward the Online MBA Program courses as it is self-funded solely by student tuition and fees. This waiver can be applied toward the On-Campus MBA Program.

This policy is effective for students admitted Fall 2020 and forward.

Transfer Credits

titleCan I transfer credits from another university?

Transfer credit is not a guarantee. However, graduate credits may be considered for transfer if the following criteria is met:

  • The credits were earned from an institution that is AACSB accredited.
  • A grade of “B” or higher was earned in the graduate work.
  • The credits were completed within six years from the date the UWF graduate degree is awarded.  

Students may have a maximum of six semester hours or two courses (whichever is greater in credit) of graduate work at other universities accepted toward their program requirements at UWF. The department chairperson’s permission is required for the credits to be accepted.

Once you are enrolled, you will have access to ArgoApps, which are hosted applications & virtual desktops that allow UWF students to access specialized computer applications via the Internet.

Sometimes, additional programs come as part of your textbook (for example McGraw Hill Connect access). If you are required to purchase software for a course separate from what is provided, the instructor will notify you.
