Starting in Fall 2026, UWF will use a Canvas course template to provide a consistent course navigation structure across courses. The template is automatically applied to newly created academic course shells and is intended to improve the student experience by making course navigation more predictable and consistent.

 Default Navigation in the UWF Course Template

Student Tools Enabled by Default

The UWF course template is designed to provide students with a consistent navigation experience while giving instructors flexibility to enable additional tools when needed. The following navigation items are visible to students by default in all courses created from the UWF course template.

Instructor Tools Enabled by Default

The following tools are enabled in the course template to support course management, accessibility, and quality improvement. These tools are available to instructors and course designers and are not visible to students.

Note: Some tools may only function if they have been licensed, configured, or adopted for your course or department. Enabling a navigation item does not automatically provision access to the associated service.

Recommended Workflow: Use a Selective Course Import

If you are reusing materials from a previous course, use a selective course import rather than importing all content. A selective import lets you copy only the content you need while preserving the navigation structure and settings of the course template.

Recommended Steps

  1. Open your new course shell.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Select Import Course Content.

  4. Choose Copy a Canvas Course.

  5. Locate the previous course.

  6. Select Select specific content rather than All content.

  7. Choose the modules, assignments, discussions, quizzes, pages, and files you want to import. DO NOT import Course Settings.

  8. Review and publish your course as needed.

Already Imported an Entire Course?

If you have already copied all content from a previous course and your navigation menu no longer matches the template:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Select the Navigation tab.

  3. Review the visible and hidden navigation items.

  4. Make any desired adjustments.

  5. Select Save.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The template is applied when a new course shell is created and does not automatically modify existing courses.

Yes. Faculty retain control of their course settings and navigation. The template provides a recommended starting point.

Canvas imports navigation settings along with course content when performing a full course copy. This can overwrite the navigation configuration that was originally applied by the template. 

Review the course navigation settings under Settings → Navigation and adjust them as needed. If you need assistance, contact the OTLT or ITS Help Desk.
