A transient student is a degree-seeking student from a Florida public university or college who has received permission to enroll in courses at another Florida public institution for a specific term. This policy establishes guidelines for transient students seeking academic accommodations while enrolled in courses at the University of West Florida (UWF).
Eligibility for Accommodations:
Transient students who have been approved for academic accommodations at their home institution are eligible to request equivalent accommodations at UWF.
Accommodations must be in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and institutional policies at UWF.
Process for Requesting Accommodations:
Apply and be admitted to the University of West Florida
Complete the online Student Accessibility Resources (SAR) “Application for Services” form.
Provide documentation of academic accommodations from the home institution. This will be considered sufficient documentation for the student to receive accommodations for 1 semester. If the student enrolls at UWF for more than 1 semester, additional supporting documentation for the student's disability will be required in order to continue the academic accommodations.
The documentation is carefully assessed to determine if the accommodations utilized at the student's home institution may be used while the student is attending UWF.
Student will need to make an appointment to meet with the SAR staff. Students requesting reasonable accommodation will engage in an interactive process to find the best accommodation to meet the student's needs on a case-by-case basis. During the interactive meeting, the student’s disability and academic history are discussed, services are explained, and the rights and responsibilities of the student are reviewed.
Staff will notify the student of the accommodations and services for which he/she has been found eligible to receive.
- SAR will notify faculty of the approved academic accommodations.
Student Responsibilities:
The student must initiate the accommodation request process at UWF in a timely manner.
The student must comply with all procedures and deadlines set by the UWF SAR office.
If adjustments are needed, the student should communicate promptly with the UWF SAR office.
Limitations and Considerations:
UWF is not obligated to provide accommodations that fundamentally alter course requirements or impose undue hardship.
Some accommodations may vary due to differences in resources and course delivery formats at the host institution.
Temporary accommodations may be provided while verification is being processed.
Dispute Resolution:
If a student encounters difficulties in receiving approved accommodations, they should first attempt to resolve the issue through the UWF SAR office. If further assistance is needed, the student may seek guidance from their home institution’s disability services office for support in facilitating communication and resolution.
