Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Chapters 35 benefits 

If you’re the child or spouse of a Veteran or service member who has died, is captured or missing, or is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected disability, you may be eligible for the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program. (If your Sponsor died in the line of duty you might be entitled to the Fry Scholarship. You will need the following documents to use your  Dependents Educational Assistance Program (DEA, Chapter 35) benefits at UWF:

Application for Ch. 35 VA Education Benefits

 You can apply online via VA.gov (Online VA Form 22-5490). Apply for Education Benefits after high school graduation (if you have already applied skip this step).

You do no need sign in to start your application. If you do not sign in, you must complete your application as it will not save any progress. Dependents may first create an ID.me or Login.gov account. You must be at least 18 years old to create this account. Creating an ID.me Login will save your application progress.

We will also need your sponsor's full name, social security number. branch of service and which type of beneficiary you are (i.e., Spouse, 1st child using benefits, 2nd child using benefits, etc.). Without your sponsor's full name and social security number, we cannot submit your certification to the VA.

Certificate of Eligibility (COE)

You will receive this document in the mail a few months after completing the application. We will need a copy for our records.  Please send it to mvrc@uwf.edu.  

Register for Courses

If you have already registered skip this step.

Meet with your academic advisor to get registered for classes.  After registering for classes, you will need to upgrade your MYUWF account to full access.  To do this, type My account in your search bar on my.uwf.edu account.  Click on Upgrade.  This can be done at least 2 hours after registering for classes.  Once the account has been updated, click the log-out button.  Once you log back into your account, you will have full access.  For additional information on this, go to:  https://confluence.uwf.edu/display/public/Upgrading+your+MyUWF+account+to+a+full-access+ArgoNet+account 

VA Enrollment Certification Form (ECF)

You will need to fill out the ECF through your my.uwf.edu account after registering for classes. The ECF must be completed every semester and whenever your class schedule changes.  To locate the form, type VA Enrollment Certification Form (ECF) in the search bar of your  my.uwf.edu account.  We cannot submit your certification to the VA until we receive this form from you.

Under the chapter, effective August 1, 2009, eligible participants (veterans, service members, and dependents) pursuing a VA approved training program may receive the following benefits at a percentage based on the length of active duty service. Application for Ch. 33 VA Education Benefits

You can apply online via VA Form 22-1990e (if you have already applied skip this step).

Application for Education Benefits should be completed after high school graduation. Dependents must first create an ID.me or Login.gov account and must be at least 18 years old to create this account. Service member should not sign in to their own account to apply for transferred of benefits as this may cause issues or delays. 

If you are under 18, a paper form of the 22-1990e will need to be completed and mailed to the VA. MVRC will require a copy of the certified mail or receipt of the form being mailed to the VA.

Monthly Enrollment Verification

All Chapter 33 students are required to verify their enrollment with the VA at the end of each month to continue receiving your Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA).  This can be done by calling GI Bill Customer Service monthly via email or text.  The VA strongly recommends using text messaging as a simple, quick, and safe option for verifying enrollment to receive your MHA uninterrupted.  When your enrollment is processed, you will receive the following text message, "Post 9/11 GI Bill housing and kicker payments now require monthly enrollment verification.  Would you like to submit yours via text?  Please reply Yes or No."   The text will come from a number with an (855) area code. Reply "YES" to opt into text message verification.  The text message link will expire 14 days after receipt. On the last day of each month, you will receive a text message requesting enrollment verification for that month.  Reply YES to verify your enrollment if your classes have not changed. If they have changed and you are no longer enrolled in the amount of credits the recording states, contact the MVRC to update your records. 

If you respond NO for text messaging verification and have a valid email address on file, you will be opted into email verification.  On the last day of the month, you will receive an email requesting enrollment verification for that month.  Select YES; my enrollment is the same to verify your enrollment.

If you fail to verify for two consecutive months, your MHA will be placed on hold.  You need to contact GI Bill customer service (1-888-442-4551 ) to verify your enrollment and release your payments.

Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) pay rates

  • Chapter 33 students will be responsible for making all payments to the school for housing fees and meal plans, as the VA will send their funding directly to the account listed when the VA application is completed. The VA will send tuition & fees directly to the school (if your benefit % is lower than 100, the student is responsible for paying the remaining amount owed directly to the school).
    • Be advised, if your benefits percentage is lower than 100% the deferment on file will be until the end of the term. Payment will be due at the end of the term. It will be your responsibility to cover the remaining balance and check your TransAct under MyUWF. 
  • Students will be responsible for making all payments to the school for housing fees and meal plans.

  • Spouse of Veteran: You will receive a semester book stipend, monthly housing allowance, and tuition and fees paid from the VA to UWF.
  • Spouse of Active Duty: You will receive a semester book stipend, and tuition and fees paid from the VA to UWF. Spouses of Active Duty members are not eligible for monthly housing allowance while their spouse is still on active duty. 
  • Dependent Child: You will receive book stipend, monthly housing allowance, and tuition and fees paid from the VA to UWF. The childe of an Active Duty member still qualifies for monthly housing allowance.

Post 9/11 GI Bill Chapter 33 Benefits (Veterans/Service member)

The Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) helps you pay for school or cover expenses while you're training for a job. If you've served on active duty after September 10, 2001, you may qualify for the Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33). Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) Chapter 1606 benefits

The Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) program offers up to 36 months of education and training benefits. If you're a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard, you may be eligible for this benefits. Veteran Readiness and Employment Chapter 31 Benefits 

If you have a service-connected disability that limits your ability to work or prevents you from working, Veteran Readiness and Employment (Formerly called Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment may help. Complete form 28-1900. Meet with your VR&E Counselor for entitlement determination and plan development.

Purchase Order/Authorization:

Veterans who have applied and met with their VR&E Counselors will have authorization to attend UWF. Your CH31 Counselor will send the PO authorization to UWF and Follett.  Meet with your academic advisor to register for classes.

VA Enrollment Certification Form (ECF):

Waivers

If you are a non-Florida resident and living in the State of Florida, your residency status will be changed to temporary resident by the Registrar’s Office once we receive the documentation from your CH31 counselor and the VSOC adds your name to the CH31 in-state residency list.

Parking Permit/Pass

Your parking permit is paid for by the VA. Once your classes have been certified by our office, the VSOC adds your name to the parking permit list.  You can then proceed to Parking Services in Bldg. 20W, Room 151 to get your permit.  Tell them you are a VA VR&E student and you have been added to the list. You will need to provide the make, model and tag # of your vehicle. Your permit will be issued to you.  The permit expires September 30th of every year.  You are responsible to get a new permit every year.  You will remain on the list until you graduate and/or you are no longer in the VR&E program.

UWF Student ID Card

Once your classes have been certified, you can go to Bldg. 20W to get your ID card at the VA's expense.  Inform them that you are a VA Vocational Rehabilitation Student.

Books and Supplies

The VA pays for tuition, fees, books, and supplies. Once we certify your classes, you will be able to get your books from the UWF bookstore. If you have not been provided with the bookstore procedures, please see the VSOC.

Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship (Chapter 33) Benefits

The Edith Nourse Rogers Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) Scholarship allows eligible Veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill or dependents using the Fry Scholarship to get added benefits. This scholarship provides up to 9 months (or $30,000) of benefits for training in high-demand fields. Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David FRY Scholarship (Chapter 33) Benefits 

The Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (Chapter 33) provides Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits to the children and surviving spouses of Service members who died in the line of duty while on active duty after September 10, 2001. Eligible beneficiaries attending school may receive up to 36 months of benefits at the 100% level. To be eligible:

  • Children and surviving spouses of an active duty member of the Armed Forces who died in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001

You will need to meet with your academic advisor to get registered for classes.  After registering for classes, you will need to upgrade your MYUWF account to full access.  To do this, type My account in the search bar of your MYUWF account.  Click on Upgrade.  This can be done at least 2 hours after registering for classes.  Once the account has been updated, click the log out button.  Once you log back into your account, you will have full access.  For additional information on this, go to:  https://confluence.uwf.edu/display/public/Upgrading+your+MyUWF+account+to+a+full-access+ArgoNet+account 

 

VA Enrollment Certification Form (ECF):

You will need to fill this form out through your MyUWF account after you have registered for classes. This form needs to be completed every semester and any time your class schedule changes.  To locate the form, type VA enrollment certification form in the search bar of your MyUWF account. 

Monthly Enrollment Verification:

To receive your monthly housing, you must verify your enrollment. The WAVE application is transitioning to the new Verify Your Enrollment application to va.gov.  In the interim, you can verify your enrollment by calling our toll free Interactive Voice Response (IVR) telephone line at 1-877-823-2378.  The Verify Your Enrollment application will soon be available for enrollment verifications at https://www.va.gov/education/verify-school-enrollment.
