Deferral eligibility is granted to students receiving veterans' education benefits from federal programs if aid is delayed in transmission to the student through circumstances beyond the student's control.

Veterans and other eligible students receiving veterans' education benefits on active duty and under Chapters 30, 32, 35, and 1606, U.S.C., are eligible for one deferment each academic term.  A 90-day deferment may be issued for the fall and spring terms and a 30-day deferment may be issued for the summer and mini-terms.  An additional deferment extension may be issued if there is a delay in the receipt of benefits provided the extension is requested prior to the deferment due date.

The University of West Florida is in compliance with PL 115-407 section 103.

titleDo I qualify for a deferment?

Any student utilizing VA Education Benefits as a funding source is permitted to apply for a deferment of 90 days in the Fall and Spring Terms and 30 days in the Summer Terms.

It is important to note that a request for deferment may be disapproved by UWF if the student Has an unpaid balance from a pervious semester for any amount of money.  A second and equally important issue is that a student must be attending the term during the request.  Example-Summer Term A or B student requests deferment; the student, if qualified may receive the deferment for both the A and B terms because they begin on the same day.  Another Example-Summer A and C student requests deferment; the student, if qualified has the A term deferred but the C term is not because the student is not actively attending the C term yet.  THIS PROCESS IS TOTALLY DEPENDENT UPON COMPUTER INTERACTION AND SUPPORT BETWEEN THE MVRC AND THE CASHIER'S OFFICE.

titleI requested a deferment but it is not reflected on my TransAct, why?

Outstand balance with UWF

If you have an outstanding balance for pervious semesters then the deferment can not be applied to your account. Monitor your TransAct through your MyUWF for account balances.

I have a balance but receive CSDVV (State Scholarship)

Be advised, the CSDDV does not pay during Summer semesters. It is student's responsibility to monitor their Account Balances and fees due.

The CSDDV is also a state scholarship which is not monitored through the MVRC. It is also not tied to VA Educational benefits. Any inquiries on the CSDDV and payment issues may be directed to the Florida Department of Education at 888-827-2004 or email at osfa@fldoe.org.

If none of these apply to you, contact the Military Veterans and Resource Center at 850-474-2550 or email us at mvrc@uwf.edu

titleMonthly Enrollment Verification

Monthly Enrollment Verification

All Chapter 33 students are required to verify their enrollment with the VA at the end of each month to continue receiving your Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA).  This can be done by calling GI Bill Customer Service monthly via email or text.  The VA strongly recommends using text messaging as a simple, quick, and safe option for verifying enrollment to receive your MHA uninterrupted.  When your enrollment is processed, you will receive the following text message, "Post 9/11 GI Bill housing and kicker payments now require monthly enrollment verification.  Would you like to submit yours via text?  Please reply Yes or No."   The text will come from a number with an (855) area code. Reply "YES" to opt into text message verification.  The text message link will expire 14 days after receipt. On the last day of each month, you will receive a text message requesting enrollment verification for that month.  Reply YES to verify your enrollment if your classes have not changed. If they have changed and you are no longer enrolled in the amount of credits the recording states, contact the MVRC to update your records.

If you respond NO for text messaging verification and have a valid email address on file, you will be opted into email verification.  On the last day of the month, you will receive an email requesting enrollment verification for that month.  Select YES; my enrollment is the same to verify your enrollment.

If you fail to verify for two consecutive months, your MHA will be placed on hold.  You need to contact GI Bill customer service (1-888-442-4551 ) to verify your enrollment and release your payments.

Read more on verifying your enrollment here: https://www.va.gov/education/verify-school-enrollment/

If you didn't receive the text message/ email or accidentally deleted it and would like to opt into text verification, please call the Education Service Center at 1-888-442-4551 to opt-in for text messaging. When you call, do NOT press 1; wait on line to speak to a representative.

Tuition deferments will be granted to students using VA Educational benefits. It is granted to avoid the assessment of late fees, denial of access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities, or the requirement to borrow additional funds due to the delayed VA disbursement of tuition funding to UWF. The tuition deferment is only for tuition fees and will not apply to any other charges on students account.

To qualify for the tuition deferment students must provide approved VA documents to our office. Required documents would be VA Form 22-1905 or TEB + 22-1990E, or 22-1990, or Certificate of Eligibility (COE), examples of VA Documents may be found here: MVRC - Getting Started

Deferments are applied to students accounts once they have submitted a VA Enrollment Certification (ECF) and have been certified. Although our office applies deferments to students accounts, the cashiers office will finalize the application of tuition deferments to students account. They may apply deferments to students account once the pervious semester has submitted grades. Ensure to monitor your student email for notification of late fees.

Deferment due dates are contingent on the documents provided to our office. Students who submit initial application documentation (1905, TEB+1990E, 1990) will be granted a 90 day deferment for fall and spring full term courses (Term 1) and 30 day deferments for summer and mini or accelerated terms. Students who provide a Certificate of Eligibility will be granted a tuition deferment until the end of the semester.

If you have less than 100% Post 9/11 on file, the tuition deferment will still be applied until the end of the semester. It is your responsibility for the percentage of the tuition and fees not covered. You may contact the Military Veteran Resource Center at 850-474-2550 or email us at mvrc@uwf.edu

IMPORTANT NOTES: Students who submit documentation to our office late (past the assessed late fee due date) will be liable for the late fee regardless if a VA Enrollment Certification Form (ECF) was submitted. Our office is unable to request for a deferment to be applied to students accounts without required documentation being on file.

If a student has available financial aid, it will be used prior to the posting of the deferment. Should financial aid be used only for tuition and fees, it may be reimbursed once the VA pays funding for tuition and fees to UWF.

An additional deferment extension may be issued if there is a delay in the receipt of benefits, due to no fault of the student, provided the extension is requested prior to the deferment due date.

Students who do not have a MyUWF student account or students enrolled in a certificate program cannot request a VA deferment. The University reserves the right to deny deferral status to students who have established an unfavorable credit rating.
