Introduction

Instructors can use Canvas Modules to structure their course and organize content and activities.  Think of the course as a filing system, where the course shell is the file cabinet.  Inside the filing cabinet are manila folders.  Modules are the manila folders of a Canvas course. The are ready to keep thematically like materials, readings, activities, and assignments together as a unit.

titleHow do I organize my course material?

Canvas provides flexible options for how to build your course.  Modules allow you to organize course content and direct the flow of your course. Modules can be set up to require students to complete materials in a sequential fashion (e.g., Week 1, Week 2, Week 3), and each module can contain files, assignments, assessments, discussions, and other learning materials.  In adding content to your modules, please be sure to use the right headings in your course content for accessibility.

What You Need to Know

Would you like students to be required to complete one module before the next module becomes available? This is easy in Canvas and it's called "conditionals," meaning one condition must be met before the next piece is made available.  Conditionals can be applied to any instructional material or assignment organized in the Modules tool.

You might use this functionality to move students through a specific sequence of information. You might also use this functionality to prevent students from opening the next module before obtaining a specific quiz score.

After adding content to the modules, you can set

...

up prerequisites that manage what modules must be completed before another is opened. You can then set your requirements for each module. Requirements include what content within the module must be completed in order for the module to be considered complete.

Note that prerequisites and requirements only manage availability of modules and the content within those modules.
